Frequently asked questions

Here is a list of common questions about our training courses. If you can't find the answer to your question here, please contact us at info@academiesb.com.

Which course should I take?

I'm a nurse or a nursing assistant

Our recommended training for your job is "CPR/AED - Healthcare provider (5h)". Specially designed for people working in the healthcare field, it will help you acquire the annual training credits required by the Ordre des infirmières et infirmiers du Québec (OIIQ) and the Ordre des infirmières et infirmiers auxiliaires du Québec (OIIAQ).

If your job also involves vaccination-related responsibilities, we recommend our "First aid - Anaphylactic (1.5h)" course. This additional training will give you the knowledge you need to be able to intervene in the event of a severe allergic reaction. You'll be better prepared for the demands of your job.

If you'd like to take a more comprehensive course, or if you need to top up your annual training hours, we recommend our "Complementary module - Healthcare provider first aid (11h)" course. Combined with the "CPR/AED - Healthcare provider (5h)" course, you'll receive in-depth, comprehensive training in resuscitation and first aid.

i'm a nurse or nursing assistant in a RPA/LTCH/CIUSSS

We recommend our "First aid - CSA Z1210-17 - 16h - Healthcare provider" training course. This 16-hour program contains all the elements of CPR/AED training required by your professional association, as well as first aid concepts in compliance with the CSA Z1210-17 standard. This is a requirement for many CIUSSS and some long-term care homes. In addition, as of July 1, 2023, the "Regulation respecting the certification of private seniors' residences” requires all personal assistance attendants to have successfully completed specific first-aid training before taking up their duties.

I'm a beneficiary attendant (PAB)

We strongly recommend registering for our "First Aid - Intermediate Level (16 hours) - CSA Z1210-17 compliant" training course. This 16-hour comprehensive course covers in depth all the essentials for responding to medical emergencies, including airway management, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), dealing with hemorrhages, and much more.

We recommend, however, that you check with your employer or with the competent authorities in your administrative region to find out their specific training requirements. While we strongly recommend "First Aid - Intermediate Level (16 hours) - CSA Z1210-17 compliant" training, as this will enable you to acquire all the skills required for your job, your employer may only require CPR training. In this case, the required training is "CPR/AED - General public (4h)".

Please note that we do not offer training in the principles of safe movement of beneficiaries (PDSB).

I work in early childhood

The training required for your job is "First Aid - Adapted to Early Childhood (8h)". This training will provide you with a certification recognized by all employers in the early childhood field, including daycare centers, schools, and leisure and sports establishments that have direct contact with children. It complies with all the standards set by the Ministère de la Famille for the practice of early childhood education. The training, which lasts eight (8) hours, focuses specifically on the needs of early childhood and includes the management of severe anaphylactic allergies.

I work in a school environment

We recommend that you follow our "First Aid - School Environment (8h)" training course. In addition to meeting the requirements of your field of employment, this comprehensive training covers CPR and first aid techniques for adults, children and infants.

I'm a teacher and I need to teach CPR to my students

We recommend our "CPR/AED - High School” course. This course is specially designed for high school teachers who are responsible for teaching their students the basics of CPR. It includes all the tools needed to fully understand and teach the principles of resuscitation. Each lesson is based on real-life situations, combining theory and practice in an interactive and enriching teaching approach.

I work in the equestrian field

Unfortunately, as of January 1, 2022, Cheval Québec requires 16 hours of first-aid training to be entirely classroom-based. As an online training company, our learning formula does not meet these requirements. We encourage you to contact your organization directly for further information and clarification.

I'm a dentist or dental hygienist

Unfortunately, according to our latest information, your professional order requires that you take your training in a classroom setting. Saint-Bernard Academy offers exclusively online training. We invite you to contact your professional association for further information, or simply to let them know that you would like to take your training with us.

I would like to become a foster family

We strongly recommend that you contact your agent at the integrated health and social services center (CISSS) in your region to find out about specific training requirements. Some administrative regions require eight (8) hours of training, while others require sixteen (16) hours. This will ensure that your region's specific first-aid needs are met.

If your region requires eight hours of training, we recommend that you take our "First Aid - General Public (8h)" course. On the other hand, if you require 16 hours of training, we recommend our "First Aid - Advanced General Public (16h)" course.

I want to adopt a child

The DYP requires that you take a "First Aid CPR - AED - SA - Level C - 16 hours" training. We therefore recommend that you take our " First aid - Advanced general public (16h)" course. This course covers the following in depth:

  • The use of an automatic external defibrillator (AED).
  • First aid for severe anaphylactic allergies (SA).
  • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) techniques for adults, children and infants (Level C).

By taking this training, you'll be well prepared to meet the DYP's first aid requirements.

Do you offer CNESST-accredited "First aid in the workplace" training?

We regret to inform you that we are still awaiting CNESST authorization to offer "First aid in the workplace" training. Although we have been ready to offer this training for a very long time, its official launch depends on this authorization. For the time being, we are therefore unable to offer this training.

However, if you're an orderly (PAB) or if you work in a Private Residence for the Elderly (RPA), an Intermediate Resource or a Family-type Resource, we invite you to consider our training "First Aid - Intermediate Level (16h) - CSA Z1210-17 compliant". This training meets the requirements of the Ministère de la Santé et des Services sociaux, and may be a suitable alternative for your situation.

How our courses works

Are your training courses certified?

The Saint-Bernard Academy operates as an independent entity specializing in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and first aid training, and has no affiliation with any other company or institution. Nevertheless, we guarantee that all our training courses comply with North American standards for Emergency Cardiovascular Care (ECC), as recommended by the International Liaison Committee On Resuscitation (ILCOR). ILCOR is the organization that issues national guidelines for ECC. Consequently, it is of the utmost importance that our company and our training courses constantly comply with these latest standards, to guarantee recognition of our accreditations. Our accreditations are publicly available on our website as proof of our authenticity.

In addition, our company is covered by $2 million in "General Liability, including Medical Malpractice and Errors & Omissions" insurance, attesting to the legitimacy and safety of all our training courses.

In short, our accreditations benefit from a validity and recognition equivalent to those issued by renowned companies.

For further information on the legitimacy of our training courses, please see our page "Why are our courses recognized?".

How are your training courses structured?

Our training courses are all 100% online and self-paced. So you can start when it's most convenient for you, and progress at your own pace.

You will have a maximum of ten (10) weeks from the date of purchase to complete your training. Since our system saves your progress, you won't have to complete the course in a single session. So you can log off and pick up where you left off the next time you log on.

Our training courses are mainly composed of readings accompanied by visual aids to help you understand the material explained. They are organized in blocks of readings covering the various subjects to be assimilated.

At the end of each reading block, you'll be asked to complete a multiple-choice test to check that you've assimilated the concepts presented. You will have a maximum of 60 minutes to complete it. While this may seem like a long time, most tests are short and quick to complete. The pass mark for moving on to the next block of readings is 80%. In the event of failure, don't worry, you have up to 10 attempts per test. Of course, if you're having trouble, don't hesitate to contact us before you've reached the maximum number of attempts.

Practical sessions are also required. Thanks to our exclusive automated system, you'll complete these sessions step by step, at your own pace. You'll be invited to build your own small CPR dummy using everyday objects, to help you learn the various first aid techniques. Our exclusive automated system will guide you easily through these steps.

As soon as you have successfully completed your training, you will automatically receive your official certificate in electronic format. You can then download it, e-mail it or print it out as you wish. In short, there's no need to wait - you'll have your certificate in your possession as soon as you've successfully completed your training.

If you need to receive the physical certification card, please contact us by e-mail as soon as you have completed the training, and we will make the necessary arrangements.

Do i have to complete my training in one session?

Once you've purchased your course, you'll have up to ten (10) weeks to complete it. Since our system saves your progress, you can log out and pick up where you left off the next time you log in.

How will i be evaluated?

Our training courses are structured in sections covering the various subjects to be assimilated. At the end of each reading module, you'll be asked to complete a multiple-choice test to ensure that you've assimilated the concepts presented. To pass each assessment, you must obtain an average mark of 80%. If you fail an exam, you can retake it immediately.

Practical sessions are also required. Thanks to our exclusive automated system, you can complete these sessions at your own pace, step by step. It's important to note that participation in these practical sessions is mandatory in all our training courses.

What about practical training?

This is a fundamental and, of course, mandatory element of our training courses. Thanks to our automated system, you can progress at your own pace, with step-by-step guidance.

In the reading preceding the practice, you will be invited to create your own CPR dummy using everyday objects, so that you can put first aid into practice.

During practice, you will be asked to start an instructional video and follow the steps presented and outlined. To ensure that the minimum practice time is respected, our system does not allow you to continue training until you have completed it.

It's important to note that, since we offer a 100% online and autonomous learning formula, we don't send a representative from Saint-Bernard Academy to your home, and you won't need to travel to complete the practical assessments. Moreover, at no time will you need to make a video or take photos.

When are your training courses available?

All our training courses are available online 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. They are designed to be accessible anywhere you have an internet connection, as well as a computer, tablet or smartphone.

Are there any delays between purchasing a course and accessing it?

In most cases, your training will be immediately accessible as soon as payment is completed. However, PayPal may take some time to provide payment confirmations. In such cases, the purchased course may be temporarily marked as "awaiting payment". This situation will be resolved within a maximum of 24 hours, and the course will then be accessible as planned.

Are there any other fees associated with your training courses?

No, there are no additional fees associated with our training courses. You will not be asked to make any further payment.
