OIIAQ

The Ordre des infirmières et infirmiers auxiliaires du Québec has implemented a continuing education obligation for its members[1][2]. This obligation is set out in the Regulation respecting the compulsory continuing education of nursing assistants in Quebec[1][2]. Members of the Order must keep their knowledge and skills up to date and perfect them in order to maintain their professional competence. All members are required to devote 10 hours per reporting period to continuing education activities directly related to their professional practice.

The Ordre des infirmières et infirmiers auxiliaires du Québec has adopted a professional standard for the continuing education of nurses[3]. 3] The purpose of this professional standard is to encourage a culture of continuing education for the nursing profession in Quebec. [3] Members of the Order must record and report the hours of training they have taken during the past year.

In the event of non-compliance with the continuing education obligation, the Ordre des infirmières et infirmiers auxiliaires du Québec may take disciplinary measures[1]. Members of the Order must therefore ensure that they comply with this obligation in order to maintain their professional competence and avoid disciplinary sanctions.

OIIQ

According to the Quebec Code of Ethics for Nurses, nurses have an obligation to provide immediate assistance to persons whose lives are in danger[1]. 1] This includes performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) when necessary. The decision regarding the level of CPR training required for nurses is influenced by their work environment, and it is up to the nurse to make the right decision. However, the nurse must be competent to perform CPR as a health care professional.

In Quebec, nurses must also comply with the Regulation respecting compulsory continuing education for nursing assistants and nurses[2]. 2] Members of the Ordre des infirmières et infirmiers du Québec (OIIQ) must complete at least 10 hours of continuing education related to their professional activities every two years. The training must be approved by the OIIQ and members may request approval for training that is not on the list of pre-approved training. The OIIQ evaluates the compliance and the admissible duration of the activity and decides whether or not to approve it.

In health care institutions, nurses are required to initiate CPR in the event of cardiac arrest, unless the client has clearly expressed his or her refusal to be resuscitated[1]. 1] The OIIQ, like other health organizations, provides clients with various ways to express their wishes regarding resuscitation. Since cardiopulmonary resuscitation is an emergency intervention, the nurse must act without delay[1].
